DIY Furniture Refinishing

DIY Furniture Refinishing

“It’s a good thing until you discover a better thing.” Martha Stewart

Are you familiar with the term ‘upcycling?’ Upcycling – or creative reuse - is basically about finding innovative ways to use or showcase an object. It’s about finding an inspired way to convert old stuff into refreshing and beautiful new stuff. It’s all about transformation.

Upcycling is not the same as recycling. Recycling is about discarding things – sending them away to be safely converted into reusable forms. Upcycling, however, is about keeping things and transforming them into something novel and pleasing. It’s all about The Revamp.

DIY furniture refinishing colour trends with Fusion Mineral Paint

The benefits of upcycling

Upcycling is fun. It’s creative and it’s without rules. On a grander scale, upcycling:

·       Minimizes the volume of discarded materials sent to landfills

·       Is a cost-effective way to redecorate

·       Allows you to adapt your furniture to suit your evolving home décor style

·       Brings joy through transforming personal items with your unique touch

·       Keeps family treasures with much-loved history where they belong - in your home!

Out with the old and in with the new…with paint

Bringing new life to cherished objects in your home can be just the thing to give your home décor a much-needed boost. A mini-makeover of well-loved furniture, for example, can add instant oomph to a room!

And it doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, upcycling beloved treasures around the house can be easy, enjoyable and rewarding. Paint, for example, can be extraordinarily transformative. Upcycling is a great way to breathe new life into good furniture – and it’s amazing how a simple lick of paint can completely transform an old chair, chest or table.

What timeworn treasures do you see in your home that could use a loving lift? A small side-table? A stool? A bench? An old wooden box?

Put your upcycling creativity to work

Benefits of Play

Benefits of Play

Play at home and in a work environment can be experiences in various forms.

Do you like to hang out and have fun with family or friends? When was the last time you had a good belly laugh? Are you spontaneous – finding little moments to dance with wild abandon, or calling up friends for a last-minute games night?  Do you chase your dog around the living room and gleefully snap the dish towel at your husband’s legs?

Or do you view playtime as a guilty pleasure and simply impossible to fit into a day filled with Adult Responsibilities?

Play is just as pivotal for adults as it is for kids

It really is!

We don’t lose the need for novelty and pleasure as we grow up. Play brings joy. And it’s vital for problem-solving, creativity and relationships.

Psychiatrist, author and Play Expert Stuart Brown, MD, compares play to oxygen. He says, “It’s all around us, yet goes mostly unnoticed or unappreciated until it is missing.” Many experiences constitute play. Play is art, books, movies, music, comedy, flirting, daydreaming, dancing, laughing, jumping in puddles, doing jigsaw puzzles.

(And DIYing with friends. Just sayin’.)

Play is empowering

Play can even facilitate deep connections between strangers and cultivate healing. Have you heard of Patch Adams? He is a renowned physician and a clown! who helps people heal through humour. Now that’s an inspiring use of play!

Play is a moving target, and so rather difficult to nail down with an exact definition. That said, it should begin in anticipation and hopefully end with some degree of fulfillment.  And in between, you find treasures like surprise, pleasure, understanding, skill, empathy — and strength of mind, body, and spirit.

Play boosts our productivity and happiness

It’s important to add play to your life – give yourself permission to play every day! Find what brings you joy. Surround yourself with playful people. Your play is a state of being – it can be whatever you want it to be.

Will you make time for play today?

Want to experience playing with paint in one of our DIY Workshops? Call to book your own Private Party with friends! It’s time we make play a priority.

Free {Hello Fall} Printable DIY Project + Recipe

“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.”
Emily Bronte

Ah, October.

There’s a chill in the air, the days are noticeably shorter, the trees are nearly bare, and tantalizing aromas of simmering soups and stews escape kitchen windows cracked open. And brisk morning or evening walks sometimes call for – gasp – scarves and gloves!

It’s happening. The Change of Seasons. Are you ready for it?

There’s so much to love about October!

There’s Thanksgiving – a welcome start to the rounds of holiday merry-making. We gather with family and friends and heaps of food, like turkey, ham, roasts and all the sides. We take a moment to express our gratitude for lives will-lived…and food and drink well-shared.

And of course, October goes out on a high note for all kids, big and small – Hallowe’en! Goblins and witches and black cats abound! Candies and pumpkins and Boos! are all around.

Fall also means a Homeworks Etc freebie printable!

We want you to launch into October with a fun printable that welcomes the new season – Hello Fall! Use your creativity to make these words shine as a new addition of Fall décor in your home!

3 Benefits of Unleashing Your Creativity

“If you’re alive, you’re a creative person.” Elizabeth Gilbert

We are all creative souls. Really. You may think to yourself, “Oh no – I don’t have a speck of creativity in me!” But wait a second. You surely do have capacities, aspirations, longings, and well, secret talents. You may think you aren’t creative.

But you are.

And having a creative outlet may, in fact, be an essential ingredient to a happy and healthy life. According to clinical neuropsychologist Catherine Carey Levisay: “There’s promising evidence coming out to support what a lot of crafters have known anecdotally for quite some time, and that’s that creating—whether it be through art, music, cooking, quilting, sewing, drawing, photography, cake decorating—is beneficial to us in a number of important ways.”

Here’s what science has to say about having a creative outlet. Creativity:

1.       Improves mental health – when you engage in an enjoyable pastime, the reward centre in your brain releases dopamine, a natural anti-depressant. Here’s to improved mood and self-esteem!

2.       Boosts cognitive health – creative expression improves connectivity between the 2 hemispheres of your brain, which improves problem-solving, reasoning and the brain’s overall processing speed. That is, crafting, for example, can help slow down aging!

3.       Enhances physical health – getting creative lowers overall stress levels: your immune system is boosted, while blood pressure and the stress hormone called cortisol are lowered. Taking up a hobby can make your body feel better!

You can be creative on your own.  Or you can join a creative community – take a DIY workshop, for example – where you find kinship and support. And laughter. Lots of it!

So, if we can bring some balance to our mental and physical health by indulging our creativity, why not take advantage and welcome it into our lives? Grab a friend – or come solo – and join us at Homeworks Etc for a DIY workshop. Let your paint brush and creative flag fly!

DIY Furniture Painting - The Painted Bench

“A throne is only a bench covered in velvet.” Napoleon Bonapart

Can you visualize a wooden bench in your foyer? At the end of your bed? As a coffee table? Or maybe on your front verandah as outdoor seating or a setting for vibrant flower pots?

The versatile, multi-functional wooden bench can work for your home in so many ways.

Let us count the ways!

  • A simple bench tucked against the wall in your front foyer is a warm welcome to family and friends. It’s a quick seat to slip off (or on!) a boot, wait for slowpokes or set down a package. You can arrange footwear below and hang jackets, hats and leashes above – great ideas for space savers.

  • Take your bench to the other side of the door – outside! Your covered front porch is the perfect setting for a decorative wooden bench. Display seasonal potted flowers or pumpkins or wreaths. Take advantage of its practicality and have a sit-down while you pull off mucky boots before entering the house.

  • Positioned at the end of your bed, a rustic bench gives you a place to prop a leg while tying a shoe or pulling on tights. It’s a lovely - and practical – backdrop for a favourite blanket and pillows, and acts as a visual anchor for your bedroom.

Create a breakfast nook banquette, a pit-stop in the upstairs hallway, a dreamy window seat. With a bench in your décor cache, you’ve got so many stylish options!

A wooden bench can last a lifetime – and become a loving feature in your home. Memories of family and friends welcomed into your home and seated on your handsome throne will live on forever!

Put your creativity to work and come join us to paint your very own wooden bench!

Home Décor with a Loving Touch

Family-Sign-Making.jpeg

Your home is your sanctuary. It’s your castle. It’s a special place of comfort and safety, and filled with love, joy, and laughter. It’s at times a haven in which to cuddle up and close off the world, and in other moments, it shines as an integral part of the neighbourhood - opening its doors to receive friends and family. And of course, we all want our home to look and feel beautiful, warm and welcoming. But shopping for charming embellishments to take your décor up a notch can get very expensive. Imagine using your own loving touch to transform your home into an exquisite place that garners ooohs and ahhhs when visitors cross the threshold. Even before they cross the threshold – you can stop them in their tracks by a bit of decorative flair on the front stoop!

DIY home décor is fun, exciting, and a wonderful low-budget option. It allows you the opportunity to infuse your (and your family’s) personality into your rooms. You have control over shaping your space into whatever you want it to be. You can let your imagination run wild…right onto your walls! And your family can contribute – by coming up with unique ideas (for example, children can contribute to fantastic makeover ideas for their bedrooms) or by rolling up their sleeves and working on projects with you.

Homemade décor is very personal, and can be the tipping point for transforming your house into your family home. It’s like baptizing your home with a river of personality and love!

If you’re interested in trying your hand at bringing handmade décor into your home, check out Homeworks Etc. for an array of DIY projects. Be prepared – once you start, you may find it hard to stop!

Social Benefits of Creating with Friends

“The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” Henry David Thoreau There’s DIY at home…and then, there’s DIY in the company of others!

And while it’s wonderful to find time and space alone for crafting, designing, and inventing, there are enormous benefits to spending time in a group setting while digging our hands in a creative project.

Firstly, let’s acknowledge that spending time on creative projects is a type of play for adults. Play brings joy, and can facilitate deep connections with both friends and strangers. In creative play, we can find surprise, pleasure, understanding, and strength of mind, body and spirit.

Secondly, rolling up our sleeves and working on DIY projects in a roomful of friends – and friends of friends - are like BIG KID sessions. We showcase our personalities as we push our creative buttons, and we have an opportunity to expand our social circle with new comrades-in-creativity who share similar interests. These sessions can become therapeutic and life-affirming experiences, as we share and learn from one another.

While we concentrate on crafting, we exchange vital life skills, like empathy. We are in a safe space to share points of view and support one another. There is a kind of intimacy and emotional awareness, and a great connection to those in the room. In this relaxed environment, while elbow-deep in bringing imagination to life, we become more open, engaged, and expressive.

Everyone laughs a little more and becomes a little less lonely.

And who knows? We might solve some of the world’s problems! Or at the least, effect a bit of social change – fight for a cause, decide to raise money for a charity, or make a small improvement to the community. Anything is possible in a roomful of like-minded friends letting their creative juices flow!

Check here for details on YOUR next DIY workshop with friends – at Homeworks Etc.

Creativity for the Soul

“Creativity is contagious. Pass it on.” Albert Einstein Just because you can’t paint a portrait or pen a novel doesn’t mean you’re not creative. Au contraire! Creativity is what makes us HUMAN. It exists within every aspect of our lives, and is not just reserved for the artistic elite.

You can – and should – reclaim your creative passion in tangible ways. Making room for creativity in our adult lives, and activating our creative muscle, can be transformative. Creative activity offers:

  • An opportunity to get ‘lost’ and release control of your logical mind
  • An outlet for emotions
  • A release for stagnant energy
  • A deeper connection to the soul

The creative process is heart-driven, allowing for freedom of self-expression and providing a sense of accomplishment. And for the typical adult consumed by the everyday busy-ness of life, a time set aside for fun, joy, and play is like reconnecting to happier, care-free, long-lost childhood memories. Imagine immersing yourself in an activity that is about more than just passing the time – it’s a chance to be authentic. The more you create, the more familiar you become with your likes and dislikes, and the more you develop you own unique style and technique. How cool is that?

The benefits of carving out time for creativity are plentiful. That life ‘busy-ness’ cries out for balance. Creative activity is a marvelous stress release, relieving built-up tension, and bringing on improved emotional and mental health. Not to mention that imaginative and inventive play beneficially exercises both the right and left sides of the brain. Creative endeavours allow you to think and process things in new ways, building layers of resourcefulness, and ultimately leading to better decision-making skills.

Making time for pursuing creative passions is, well, like caring for your soul!

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

Baby’s Nursery Design and Décor

Designing and decorating baby’s first sacred space outside the womb can feel daunting…but can be so much fun for the expectant or new mom! If ever there was a reason to pour love, joy, and hope into a room, it’s in anticipation of the arrival of a beautiful new being into this world! As nursery designer Richard Alvor notes, “Time in the nursery is a different kind of time. This is a gentle time, a quiet time, a one-on-one time; this is the beginning of connecting with your child.”

Homeworks Etc. is pleased to offer two introductory DIY Nursery sessions – two opportunities to create some magic for baby’s first room:

Creative living - an online resource

Jacqueline De'Ath loves her life. First and foremost a wife and mother, she has recently added business owner to her extensive resume. This past weekend, she launched the successful grand opening of Homeworks Etc., a unique lifestyle and DIY workshops boutique in Cloverdale. Jacqueline has fashioned a unique, warm, and welcoming space to share her passion for helping families to create their own magical rooms at home.

But there's another tag for her resume.

Jacqueline serves as Editor-in-Chief  for the online lifestyle e-magazine,  Nursery and Kids Design... A Creative Lifestyle with Children. This e-mag gem serves as a resource for connecting mothers with lifestyle choices, and focuses on fashion, decor, food, and hands-on crafting projects. Jacqueline wanted to showcase a community of local businesses and people to inspire moms to take that step beyond simple aesthetics - to create a space of belonging for their child, where they feel loved and connected.

The magazine is aimed at young families that not only take pride in their homes, but want to provide their children with family-oriented learning opportunities. Nursery and Kids Design... A Creative Lifestyle with Children makes it easy for moms to find the tools and resources to make this happen.

Hockey Dreams

blog-hockey-dreams-cover-photo.png

My son's crazy obsession with hockey!

Erin Fraser, Fine Arts Photographer in the Lower Mainland, specializes in creating “edgy, dark but romantic” photos. Sifting through her online portfolio (http://www.efraserphoto.com/), one does indeed perceive an undercurrent of romance…each photo pulls the viewer into the emotion of the setting. And the outdoors plays a big role as a backdrop to human expression.

Along these same lines of capturing feeling in her photographs, Erin has combined her son’s obsession with hockey and her love of art and design – to fashion a room that makes Carden feel absolute joy!

Where did the idea for your son’s room transformation come from?

The design concept came from my son’s crazy obsession with hockey! I wanted to marry his love for hockey with my design tastes, to avoid having too much of a character-driven room. I loved the idea of having a classy/trendy sports theme.

Did Carden have any specific requests?

Carden’s request was to have his dad’s pro jersey hanging on the wall, and he loved the idea of a hockey stick to hold his medals.

What does he love most about his room?

I’d say his favourite part of his room is being able to use the window seat as his display for favourite players. He’s also obsessed with the Patrick Kane doll, since he loves the Blackhawks.

Oh! I should probably mention the random ring. That’s my husband’s card that's autographed with that ring. It’s the Kelly Cup ring that his team won when he was playing in the ECHL. Carden loves it because it’s his dads.

How did you learn about Homeworks Etc?

My relationship with Homeworks Etc began when I found the company (online) initially because of the hockey stick wall hanger! We followed each other on Instagram after that and I got to see the other fun sports-related design elements Jacqueline had in her store.
